Rank of one who has good character

*Summary of Iṣlāḥī Majlis by Shaykhul-Ḥadīth Ḥaḍrat Mawlāna Ādam ibn Yūsuf Ṣāḥib دامت بركاته*

‎مولاي صل وسلم دائمًا أبدًا

‎على حبيبك خير الخلق كلهم

*عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رضي الله عنها قَالَتْ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَقُولُ: ‏ "‏إِنَّ الْمُؤْمِنَ لَيُدْرِكُ بِحُسْنِ خُلُقِهِ دَرَجَةَ الصَّائِمِ الْقَائِمِ*

_'Āishah ( رضي الله عنها) reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying: "A believer will attain, by his good behaviour, the rank of one who prays during the night and observes fasting during the day."_

Sunan Abī Dāwūd 4798

This is a small Ḥadīth, yet it informs us of a great blessing. The words of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would be concise yet comprehensive.

This Ḥadīth shows that there is a lot of reward for worshipping Allah ﷻ during the nights and fasting during the days. If one wishes to receive that same reward, they should adopt good character.

Some people stay up to pray at night and keep optional fasts, however they have bad character. It would be advisable for them to leave optional fasting and optional worship and first rectify their character. (This is a greater priority.)

*What is good character?*

The commentators of Ḥadīth have explained that good character is to tolerate the pain inflicted from others without taking revenge. Rather, to turn with kindness towards them, forgive them and make duā for forgiveness and goodness for them.

*Story*

Once, Shaykhul Islām Ḥaḍrat Mawlāna Ḥussain Aḥmed Madanī رحمة الله عليه was travelling by train. There was another passenger who was travelling too. The man went to the toilet and then returned immediately looking distraught. Ḥaḍrat Shaykh saw and understood. He visited the toilet and saw the mess and cleaned it all up. Then he washed his hands and returned. He told the other passenger, “you may go now”. This shows the exemplary character of Shaykhul Islām Ḥaḍrat Mawlāna Ḥussain Aḥmed Madanī رحمة الله عليه .

We will all leave this world one day, and we must prepare for this moment.

‎ ```بشر کو چاہئے کہ خیال قضا رہے

‎ہم کیا رہیں گے جب نہ رسول خدا رہے```

_Man is required to remember death everyday_

_How can we live forever when the Messenger ﷺ had to depart?_

Allah ﷻ says in the Qur'ān:

*{كَيْفَ تَكْفُرُونَ بِاللَّهِ وَكُنتُمْ أَمْوَاتًا فَأَحْيَاكُمْ ۖ ثُمَّ يُمِيتُكُمْ ثُمَّ يُحْيِيكُمْ ثُمَّ إِلَيْهِ تُرْجَعُونَ}*

_How can you disbelieve in Allah ﷻ when you were lifeless and He brought you to life; then He will cause you to die, then He will bring you [back] to life, and then to Him you will be returned._ (Al Baqarah, 28)
